What is a natural gold nugget?
A natural gold nugget is a piece of gold formed in the earth and shaped over time by nature. As gold breaks away from quartz deposits, it can wash into rivers and streams, where water, sand, and rock naturally tumble it into its own texture, shape, and character.
How are natural gold nuggets formed?
Gold forms naturally in quartz deposits deep within the earth. Over time, erosion exposes veins of gold, causing pieces to break away and move into rivers and streams. The natural motion of the water smooths and shapes the gold, creating the unique form of a natural gold nugget.

Natural gold nuggets average around 22kt, or approximately 90% pure. This is much higher than traditional 10kt gold, which is 41% pure, or 14kt gold, which is 58.5% pure. Depending on the river, stream, and mineral mix, gold nuggets can range from 70% to as high as 95% pure.
What makes a gold nugget valuable?
A gold nugget’s value is based on its rarity, purity, size, shape, and natural character. Nuggets with higher gold content, rich color, strong luster, and distinctive form are especially desirable. Larger nuggets are increasingly rare and are sold at a premium.

Yes. The larger the gold nugget, the rarer it becomes. A one-ounce gold nugget is now considered as rare as a five-carat diamond, making fine natural gold nuggets highly collectible as well as beautiful in jewelry.
